Media Alert: Three Good Resources
distributed 8/28/02 - ©2002

A quick media alert from Eco-justice Ministries --

The World Summit on Sustainable Development, now underway in Johannesburg, has prompted some extensive reports in the news media. Three widely-available items are listed below. These could be good sources of information for you and those you work with, helpful additions to your resource collection, and great ways to start conversations with others.

Overall, the news coverage of this event creates a "teachable moment" for lifting up the intertwined themes of environmental protection and poverty. And be sure to include these negotiations in the prayers of your church this weekend!

Shalom!

This Friday, August 30, 2002, on PBS (probably at 9 PM, but check local listings), NOW with Bill Moyers and the BBC present "The Earth Debate," a special ninety-minute program from the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. Moyers generally does excellent work in dealing with these sorts of issues. The website for the program allows you to check the schedule for your local broadcast.

Time Magazine for 8/26/02 featured a "Special Report: How to save the Earth." That issue is off the newstands (sorry!), so ask your friends if they have a copy.

National Geographic Magazine for September, 2002, has an article on "State of the Planet" (7 scientists / 7 signs of progress / 7 setbacks / 7 species on the brink / 7 sanctuaries). The large map inserted in the issue provides more substantive information.
